Ceremonia
Good afternoon and welcome,
Thank you very much for joining us in this ceremony for the “CONTRATAS Y OBRAS RESPETO A LOS ANIMALES” (Respect to the Animals) Awards, fifteenth and sixteenth edition.

Asistentes a la entrega del premio “Respeto por pos animales”

We cannot start this event without thanking the Faculty of Law at the Autonomous University of Barcelona and especially the persons who made the Master in Animal Law a reality, with the guidance of tutor and instructor Mrs. Marita Candela, for the opportunity they give us to investiture the awards of this boardroom. We also want to thank Mr. Josep Maldonado for his presence, as well as Mr. Steve Wise.

Teresa Giménez-Candela (Directora del Máster en Derecho Animal y Sociedad y del ICALP), Krishna Singh (PETA), Steven Wise (NonHuman Rights Project), Dra. Esther Zapater (Decana de la Facultad de Derecho de la UAB), Fernando Turró (fundador y administrador de la empresa Contratas y Obras), Alberto Martínez (CyO), Josep Maldonado (fundador e integrante de la Asociación Parlamentarios Defensa Animal), Núria Murlá

The “ Respeto a los Animales “ awards were established by Contratas y Obras company, 16 years ago at the continuing lack of precisely respect by our species to the NON HUMAN species.

We are convinced that the culture of respect is a key to the progress of the human society today. It is therefore necessary and encourages all kinds of actions in order to avoid any kind of violence against animals. This is a scourge unfortunately deeply rooted in the times in which human beings are considered supreme to the rest of the living beings which many profess utter contempt.

De izquierda a Krishna Singh (PETA EUROPE), Dra. Esther Zapater (Decana de la Facultad de Derecho de la UAB), Steven Wise (NonHuman Rights Project)

To transform this society and make the change here where the present people crave, is necessary that everyone is informed and trained. Information to understand that there is some sentient beings that are created privileged and can live from the suffering of others. To quote Jorge Reichmann “ALL ANIMALS ARE BROTHERS " and as we say, we ALL come from the same place.

Therefore, we continue to work to put aside our self-centeredness and extend our activities and actions for the good of all animals, human and nonhuman. We have a long way to go, until we ensure that the rights of animals are equal.

Intervención de la Dra. Esther Zapater (Decana de la Facultad de Derecho de la UAB)

We say that there still remains a lot to be done, because our economic system as we know it is based on the exploitation of natural, human and economical resources. If little has been done since the Universal Declaration of Human Rights UN, what chance do the nonhumans have to defend themselves by using their language and the law?

We say that there still remains a lot to be done, because our economic system as we know it is based on the exploitation of natural, human and economical resources. If little has been done since the Universal Declaration of Human Rights UN, what chance do the nonhumans have to defend themselves by using their language and the law?

In this context, we extend our gratitude to people like Steve Wise, for the great work that they are developing in order to initiate a response from our law for even a bigger respect and equality between humans and nonhumans.

Intervención de la Prof. Dra. Teresa Giménez-Candela (Directora del Máster en Derecho Animal y Sociedad y del ICALP)

EWith the “CONTRATAS Y OBRAS RESPETO A LOS ANIMALES” award, we want to clarify that we are not the specimen that dictates the rules and that we shouldn’t govern the rights of all living beings. Each species has its own rules and what we have to do is respect this fact and live in harmony.

This is the spirit that has guided the application of the awards for 16 years now, supporting journalists who report animal abuse of sentient beings, mainly for human consumption and therefore against intensive farming and for supporting the work of organizations and individuals worked in this same line.

Intervención de la Prof. Dra. Teresa Giménez-Candela (Directora del Máster en Derecho Animal y Sociedad y del ICALP)

During this time, recognized media as the Spanish Television, La Vanguardia , El Mundo, Onda Cero , National Radio of Spain and organizations such as the “Igualdad Animal” (Animal Equality) have obtained the “CONTRATAS Y OBRAS RESPETO A LOS ANIMALES” award for their public commitment to the defense of NO HUMAN rights.

Intervención de la Prof. Dra. Teresa Giménez-Candela (Directora del Máster en Derecho Animal y Sociedad y del ICALP)

The merit of journalists ( Carlota de la Fuente, Javier Rebollo , Jesus Mosterín , Rosa de las Nieves, Miguel Escudero , Nativel Preciado, Bru Rovira, Albert Castillón , Francisco Rego , Carolina Pinedo , Jordi Bigues , Joan Sella, Manel Arranz and Antoni Ortí ) to publish stories on this topic is huge. The pressures of many economic sectors for not talking about this reality are very distressing but they still continue to report and transmit accurate information to the society to gradually reach the respect for all living things that we have mentioned earlier. In Contratas y Obras, we are aware that this initiative is like a drop in the sea and that the work we have ahead of us is still a lot. However, we also know that every step we take forward brings us even closer to our goal.

[SPEECH OF PROFESSOR DR. TERESA GIMÉNEZ-CANDELA]
Nulla dies sine linea (Plin. HN, 35)

I have chosen this phrase of Pliny (Nulla dies sine linea) as a motto of life for many years. But when I began to be aware of how much we have to do for the animals, the line is no longer singular, to become an unstoppable plural, a torrent of words and actions that allow us to break the silence, which, especially in the field of Law, we have dedicated to animals. This is the meaning of this Máster.

I had the great fortune to be surrounded by people with talent and heart, two ingredients that, combined, make us resistant to any difficulty. Therefore, why students and Alumni, Professors, the Faculty and its staff, the UAB is proud and grateful to receive this award from the CyO Foundation, which is a very large to continue working with enthusiasm. We are a public university, service oriented and that effort is dedicated to animals.

In the task that brings us here today we can not let a day without line, a witness, a step forward to transform the world around us in a more just world kinder and more compassionate to animals.

Thank you!

[SPEECH OF NURIA MURLÁ]
I’m honored to be here today on behalf of the alumni of the Master in Animal Law and Society, almost one hundred people who have already been in the Master in each of its editions: the in-class one or the online.

I had the privilege to be a student of the first edition of the in-class Master. It means that I have had the chance to meet, more or less, the students of all other editions. And I can assure that there is something in common in all of them: many people of all editions worked on animal protection before their enrollment to the Master in Animal Law and Society, but one day they decided to spend a time of their lives in learning more for a better work. This sentence “earning more for a better work” has become a "leit motive" of the Master, and we, the alumni feel proud of it.

But it is not all about learning at the Master in Animal Law and Society, there is also about connections. During this time different people has been enrolled to the Master: people from many different origins, there have been people from all countries except, for the moment,: for Oceania, with very different backgrounds, not only lawyers, and with many different interests on animal protection. That's why it is very easy for us to built real interdisciplinary working groups, when necessary, that can analyze an issue from many different perspectives that will improve animal protection.

Gentlemen from Fundació CyO, thank you very much. Dr. Gimènez-Candela, congratulations.

[SPEECH OF MACARENA MONTES]
I feel very privileged to be here with you in the prize "Respect for Animals" award ceremony to the Master in Animal Law and Society and PETA Europe. Both institutions honored tonight, perform two fundamental tasks so we can evolve morally as a society: activism and education, in favour of a more respectful treatment of animals.

Since the creation of this programme in 2010, Prof. Dr. Giménez-Candela and her team have put great effort, many hours of work, energy and motivation in forming people who dreamt of working and developing their careers fighting for the most vulnerable beings in our society.

The Master is a platform where people who are interested in animals can turn to with the purpose of studying, debating, seeking for arguments, thinking and writing about their passion. Specially considering that in my country Animal Law is not taught in Law Schools and there is no Master's programm in this topic. Thanks to this Master, that is one of a kind in the world, people that come from distant places, like me, can make their dream come true. Good night.

[SPEECH OF TARAH DALY]
It is an honour to be here among such esteemed guests this evening. I want to firstly congratulate Dr. Gimenez-Candela, the master in animal law and also PETA Germany for the awards that they have received this evening.

As a student of the current and extremely international edition of the Master, I have seen firsthand how it takes something very special to draw people from all over the world to study such a novel subject.

As well as being the only one of it's kind in Europe I think this Master approaches animal rights and animal protection in a unique and important way. The master draws attention to the many ways that it is possible to work towards reducing animal exploitation. We are provided with a range of perspectives from a variety of professionals, from law professors to philosophers, veterinarians and many more.

The necessity for collaboration between these animal advocates has been stressed many times, and we are lucky that Dr Gimenez-Candela, the driving force behind this Master is someone who is uniquely skilled at bringing people together to work for the common goal of animals. Thank you to Dr Gimenez-Candela and her team for this Master and congratulations again to you and to PETA Germany on the awards you received tonight.

We thank you all for your attention. We remind you that we still receive journalistic work for the seventeenth edition of the awards whose bases can be check in RESPETOALOSANIMALES.COM

If you like we can celebrate this award ceremony with a glass of champagne .
