ABSTRACT

On December 2nd, 2015, Colombian Parliament passed the Law nº 172, filed in on September 3rd, 2014. Whit this new Law, Colombia recognize animals as sentient beings, following the path initiated by the European Union Treaty and the recently modified French Code Civil.

To ensure a proper protection of animals in their condition of sentient beings, the Law modifies other legal bodies such like the Colombian Civil Code (1887); The National Statute for the Protection of Animals (1989); and the Criminal Code, that now includes the title “CRIMES RELATED TO ANIMALS. Crimes against the life and the physical or emotional integrity of animals.”
