Alumni of the Master in Animal Law and Society attended Dr Temple Grandin’s lecture on Auditing Animal Welfare: Practical Improvements in Slaughter Plants

On Wednesday 29th October 2014, Loïs Lelanchon and Tisa Kosem, alumni of the Master in Animal Law and Society, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona attended a lecture in distinguished presence of Dr Temple Grandin, Professor of Animal Science at Colorado State University, USA.

The event was held in Brussels at the Permanent Representation of the State of Hessen to the EU and gathered participants from EU institutions, professional organisations, NGOs and various stakeholders.

The lecture focused on improving animal welfare in slaughterhouses notably in the EU and the US.

As such, René Danau, European Commission, DG SANCO, Animal Welfare Unit presented the EU legislation related to the welfare of animals at the time of killing.

The floor was then given to Dr Temple Grandin who shared with a captivated audience the results of her research based on 30 years’ experience in auditing animal welfare in slaughterhouses in the US and worldwide.

Following the lecture, Tisa and Loïs had the privilege to exchange ideas with Dr Grandin on her recommendations to improve animal welfare.

Loïs Lelanchon, from the 2nd edition, is now a PhD candidate in Animal Law (UAB) and works for Humane Society International (HSI) for which he is actively advocating for the protection of animals worldwide.

Tisa Kosem, from the 3rd edition, is currently completing a traineeship at the Federation of Veterinarians of Europe (FVE) where she is perfecting and enhancing her professional skills in animal health and welfare. She also serves as a legal rapporteur for Derecho Animal.

Tisa and Loïs are two examples of the dozens of professionals dedicated to animals the Master in Animal Law and Society (UAB), which is now running its 4th edition, has already trained.

Dr Temple Grandin’s research articles including "Animals Are Not Things" and her latest contribution "Animal Welfare and Society's concerns: Finding the Missing Link", are available online.
