Report on animal abuse in the “turkey drop” of Cazalilla

2014.02.04

Each year, on February 3, on the day of San Blas, a festival is celebrated in Cazalilla (Jaén) in honor of the town´s patron saint. Included in the unofficial program of the festival (as the event is never included in the festival program provided online by the Municipal Government), there is the custom of throwing a female turkey from the Clocktower of the Church of Santa María Magdalena. According to tradition, whoever catches the bird is guaranteed to have good luck for the entire year.

Asanda, the Asociación Andaluza para la Defensa de los Animales [Andalucian Association for the Defense of Animals], has typically filed a report against this practice. Until now, the maximum imposed penalty has been 2001 Euros, which is the maximum amount established by Law 11/2003 of 24 November, on the Protection of Animals in Andalucía.
