RESUMEN

This article by Valeria Barros, originally published in the Revista de Derecho Ambiental No. 36 in December 2013, is a discussion of the attempts to include Mother Earth as a legal subject by several Latin American nations in the Rio 20 Conference on Sustainability. The importance, as highlighted by the author, is the extension of an ethics and an extension of the right to be a legal subject beyond the borders of the human sphere, which has been the normal mode of thinking in Western civilizations. What is interesting from the perspective of Animal Law is precisely this extension of legal protection and possibility to be a subject, which is put forth by many scholars.
