Six months in prison for hitting a dog with an axe

Criminal Court no. 1 of Orense has sentenced a man for animal abuse to six months in prison, a fine of 250 Euros and a special disqualification from any profession or trade related to animals.

The events took place in January 2010, when the convicted man hit his neighbor’s dog with an axe “without justifiable cause”. The animal, which was chained to a hut, suffered a fracture in the eye area. According to the sentence, the legally protected good “is the dignity of the animal as a living being which must prevail when there is no legitimate reason to justify gratuitous suffering”.
