ABSTRACT

In this article, the rules that regulate the relationship between humans and animals in Argentina are discussed. With a first law issued in 1891 –which demonstrated a certain sensitivity towards the issue-, until the laws prevailing today there is a continuum of hits and misses that should be analyzed and studied in depth. The current law of animal protection in Argentina is from 1954 and, as in other countries, the priority is establishing the relationship to the benefit of agricultural commerce and not inspired in animal welfare as could be the case in Europe and much less in the Law for the Animal itself. In this manner, the framework legislation is far from understanding animals as sentient beings or the subject of rights.
