Law professor at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), with an internationally recognized extensive teaching and research career. A strong background in Animal Law is the key to the changes needed in the legal system. With this thought in mind, she has introduced the subject of Animal Law in the Law Degree at the UAB, she has founded and edits this site, directs both the Master in Animal Law and Society (on-site and online), a pioneer course in Europe, and the Research Group on Animals, Law and Society (SGR – ADS).

Carly Elizabeth Souther is an LL.M. and Ph.D. candidate in Animal Law and Society at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona in Spain. Ms. Souther has published on a wide range of issues in both legal and medical journals, including theGeorgetown Journal on Poverty Law & Policy and the Care Management Journals. She provides peer review analysis for the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, the nation's preeminent journal on aging and medicine. Ms. Souther formerly served as an Assistant General Counsel at Florida's Agency for Health Care Administration, a research fellow at the Center for Innovative Collaboration in Medicine and the Law of the Florida State University College of Medicine, and second-chair of the Juvenile Justice course at the Florida State University College of Law. Ms. Souther is actively involved in animal welfare advocacy initiatives. She is co-founder, pro bono Chair, and past President of Petagon International, Inc. She created and presents "Fight for Fido – Dogfighting and Florida Law," a Continuing Legal Education one-hour ethics course for the Florida Bar (Course No. 1405303N). She developed a twenty-hour module on third-degree felony dogfighting for Leon County Schools through the Respect for Animals Program. During law school, she was the Vice-President of the Student Animal Legal Defense Fund and conducted bill analysis for Pets Ad Litem. Ms. Souther is a member of the Florida Bar. International Law graduate from the University of Naples, post-graduate diploma on “Legal professions” at University of Rome in International Criminal Law, she has attended a graduate training on international and national environmental law at ISPI, Institute of International Policy of Milan. Since 2006 she is responsible of LAV legal office, one of the most important Italian ONGs covering animal rights (www.lav.it), working particularly on criminal and public animal law, as attorney and as consultant for ministries, public veterinarians, judges and police, and she has worked on various national and regional proposals regarding animal law. She is professor at the National School of Corpo Forestale dello Stato (police corps specialized on animal law) on criminal and public animal law, which she has also taught at the Public School of Veterinary, tribunals and other police corps around Italy. She has organized numerous conferences and meetings about animal rights in tribunals and other public institutions. She is author of numerous publications and researches on animal law (www.dirittoambiente.net), as contribution on “animal's crimes ” published within the Italian Codice dell’Ambiente and, finally, she has written about animal rights in Zoos, Circuses and during Transport in the ‘Trattato di Biodiritto’, the biggest Italian work which analyzes ethics and philosophic questions linked to the law and that, for the first time, has dedicated in the 2012 a whole volume to the Animal Question. She has also written with the judge of the Supreme Court, Maurizio Santoloci, a manual dedicated to animal rights and relative criminal legislation in Italy and Europe: ‘Tutela giuridica degli animali’, edizioni Diritto all’Ambiente (at the 4th edition), which is used by police and judges to enforce animal rights.
