ABSTRACT

Since the 1970', animal welfare protection has been continuously enlarged and strengthened in Community law, especially in recent years. On the international scene, the European Union (EU) promotes high standards of animal welfare protection and wishes to continue to be a leading figure in this field as a supranational organization. But despite now well grounded account of animal welfare in Community law, some progress are lower than others, and this protection still lacunar. What evaluation can be made of the animal welfare protection in the EU at the end of 2012? As regards to the sources of primary law (treaties) and secondary law (directives and regulations), this article provides for a mitigated evaluation of this protection. However, the EU continues to move forward and new advances are coming in order to better protect animals as sentient beings
