The EU recommends the creation of an Expert Commission in animal legislation

2012.04.05

The text linked is the opinion of the Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety for the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development in the European Union Strategy for the Protection and Welfare of Animals for the period 2012-2015.

In this view, the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety requested the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development, which is responsible, to incorporate a set of suggestions on a resolution. These suggestions (7 total) all revolve around the improvement of animal welfare in the European Union.

Thus, it is recalled that the EU strategy on animal welfare should include initiatives and actions to promote the welfare of animals in all policy areas; also welcomes the inclusion of a European framework law on Animal Welfare strategy; urges the Commission to adapt or introduce new policy instruments to solve some problems such as cases of dairy cows, farmed fish and transport of live animals; requests the Commission to adopt a community-wide strategy for development and use of alternative non-animal test, urges the Commission to carry out a careful examination of the effects on animal health human health and the environment from the current unsustainable methods of livestock production, and finally asks the Commission to ensure the inclusion of strategies and actions to reduce the use of animals in research, to protect wildlife.

As we can see, this text is of great importance, since it stimulates the creation of a group of experts in animal law, which help to improve and clarify the EU legislation on the subject. Because, without doubt, one of the biggest problems we encounter in the field of animal welfare law at Community level is the lack of experts in this matter and, even more obvious is the large spread existing legislation that restricts the work to legal operators. We expect the text to give the expected results
