ABSTRACT

There is a good number of linguists, psychologists and other scholars from different fields who believe that a speaker’s native language influences in a crucial manner the world view each speaker acquires, and also contributes to establish taxonomies and shape, or even determine, thought in general. Starting from our acceptance of these scholars’ principles, we review and briefly analyse some linguistic patterns in the English language, such as idioms, sayings, and proverbs, which are in common use and express derogatory ideas against non-human animals implying that they they exist for our convenience. It is our belief that by being aware of this verbal behavior we may be helping to correct the underlying conceptions and thus better ourselves and society.
Keywords

sayings, idioms, proverbs, verbal animal abuse, linguistic determinism
